Laws that catch visitors out

• Illegal drugs, including cannabis, are strictly prohibited even in small quantities — expect long jail sentences of up to 10 years and heavy fines.
• Paying for sex is illegal; from 1 July 2025 this also covers buying sexual acts online.
• Physical punishment of children is prohibited.
• Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 31 March.

Drones

Drone flying in Sweden follows the common EU rules (EASA — Regulation (EU) 2019/947, Open category). You must register as a drone operator before flying any drone that has a camera and is not a toy; a single registration is recognised across the EU/EEA. Label the drone with your operator ID, keep within the Open-category limits (subcategories A1/A2/A3), and check the national “geographical zones” that restrict or ban flying near airports, over crowds and at sensitive sites. Register and check the zone map through the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) before you travel.

Scams to watch

Pickpockets target tourists for passports and cash in the major cities. Gang-related violent crime, including knife crime, has been reported in parts of Malmö, Stockholm and Gothenburg.

Health hazards

FCDO lists biting insects and ticks among Sweden’s health risks — use tick-bite precautions (cover up, use repellent) in forest or long grass and check TravelHealthPro before you travel.

Docking & terminals in Stockholm

Ships berth alongside; Stockholm is not a tender port, but docking locations vary greatly in distance from the city centre.

• Stadsgården — Approximately 2–2.5 km southeast of Gamla Stan (Old Town) (20–30 minute waterfront walk, or short bus, ferry, or taxi)
• Frihamnen — Approximately 4 km from Gamla Stan (Bus 76, bus 1, cruise-line shuttle, or taxi; walking not typical)
• Nynäshamn — Approximately 60 km south of Stockholm; Stockholm is a day trip from here (Commuter train from Nynäshamn to Stockholm Central, approximately one hour each way)

Mobility & step-free access

Getting around between the pier and town:

• Walk — 20–30 minute waterfront walk from Stadsgården berth to Gamla Stan
• Bus — Bus 76 or bus 1 from Frihamnen terminal; commuter train from Nynäshamn to Stockholm Central
• Metro — Extensive Tunnelbana network across the city
• Ferry — Passenger ferries to Djurgården island and around the harbour

Step-free options vary by pier and by the day — confirm the specifics with your operator and the ship’s guest-services desk before booking.

Heading back at the end of the day: The three docking points range from central Stadsgården to Frihamnen (4 km from Gamla Stan) to Nynäshamn (60 km and roughly one hour by train). Passengers must confirm their ship's exact berth and factor in return journey time before going ashore.

Cruise lines don’t always tell you which pier you’re on, and it’s easy to forget once you’re ashore. As you leave the ship, note or photograph your pier’s name — then give your taxi that exact pier (or your ship’s name) for the trip back.

Your exact pier is assigned per sailing — confirm it on the ship’s daily programme or gangway signage before heading ashore.

Getting back to the pier

Cruise berths at Frihamnen and Stadsgården are served by taxi, bus, or walking back to the city centre, depending on which berth the ship uses.
